Zhang Xiangxi
Biography
Zhang Xiangxi’s work uniquely blends ink painting on silk with natural mineral, botanical, and animal-derived pigments. Grounded in geometric structures such as houndstooth and diamond patterns, the artist deliberately avoids the spontaneous blending and fluid diffusion characteristic of traditional ink wash techniques. Instead, through the layering, arrangement, and overlapping of color blocks, and inspired by Gestalt psychology, he constructs visual effects that simultaneously embody static tension and dynamic psychedelia. The works absorb the rationality and sublimity of Western abstract art while continuing the naturalistic spirit of Chinese artistic tradition, forming a distinct artistic language. In his creative process, the repetitive act of layering colors serves as a form of personal meditation, capturing thought and time within the artwork. Through his pieces, he explores the balance between self, action, and consciousness, carving out a new expressive path for ink art within both traditional and contemporary artistic contexts.
