“Meno-pause is a collaborative performance, which invite the gallery guests to respond to my key-note by automatic-writing their response on a large roll of paper fixed against the gallery wall and unrolled to the the floor. The roll served as a collaborative medium for participants of the workshop and guests of the opening to react to the menopause subject, like an interactive game, guided by myself. Each player of the game let their train of thought materializes on the paper though etymology, word games, puns, association of ideas.” -- Adele Jacques, Artist
Poem “Meno-Pause” (Excerpted) by Adele Jacques
Women BIRTH. They cramp, they push through, they create. They release too.
Regeneration is our nature. It’s a ritual, a dance.
I have been rocked half my life by a planet pulling entire oceans over miles of sand in one night, exulting bright white, blue or harvest pregnancies every 28 days on the dot, and playing tide with eggs and my blood.
But one day, way too early for me, it stopped.
Moon - pause. She doesn’t.
And I don’t stop dancing. Menopause!
Aïe. The symptoms started.
Enters a flood in a desert.
Thirsty animals and living creatures.
Dry (down), and wet (on the bust).
Needles under my skull skin, itchy fingers, so tired.
FSH high: dense perineum, strange libido. And sudden hot, hot, hot flashes when I cook, drive, talk, or do nothing. What’s happening?
