Inspired by science fiction novels, Chaix paints fantastical narrative landscapes that transport viewers into surreal underwater world. Her otherworldly landscapes—merging wild nature with domestic settings—explore themes of coexistence, duality, transformation, the passage of time, and the tension between illusion and reality.
Chaix’s practices involve multiple layers of various medium. Acrylics form the foundation, while pastels create a transparent effect. She then layers ink to evoke the mysterious glow and tonality of her underwater scenes. Sometimes, she introduces a subtle shimmer using metallic silver, enhancing the dreamlike atmosphere.
Through her paintings, Chaix opens discussions on human passivity and our bizarre behaviors while in the face of danger and environmental issues. Her storytelling is mysterious and open-ended, inviting personal interpretation and encouraging each viewer to uncover their own meaning within the work.
"Like a book’s narrative, the longer you read Chaix’s paintings, the more clues you are given about the plot of the story––the interpretation of which, largely depends on the viewer. Her paintings encourage viewers to suspend their disbelief, blurring the line between imagination and reality. Employing a sometimes larger than life format on canvas or paper, Chaix uses a predominantly green palette of pastels, oil, and ink on her work to immerse people in her world. The isolated, caged people in suffocating floods in her work may create surreal dreamscapes, but in present times amidst a global pandemic, they transcend science fiction and resemble reality. Despite the disaster, Chaix holds onto hope and the idea that maybe everyone will survive, which we can see through the endurance of the people in her work. "
