Yiwei Gallery is pleased to introduce Virtual Cravings, a dynamic new exhibition of paintings and merchandise by Clovis Schlumberger.

The exhibition explores the interplay between escapism, addiction, and alluring artificial worlds. The artist invites viewers to reflect on the impact the “virtual” has on our lives and psyche. Schlumberger’s bright, predominately yellow visuals could be seen as modern versions of cave paintings. His repertoire of familiar icon-like characters a global audience can “read”, communicate in a fun, dynamic and direct mode, through their coded body language in simplified backgrounds.

The genderless and ethnically neutral approach to the figures also allows for a universal and inclusive representation. Characters seem trapped by the device they are attempting to use to escape. Schlumberger’s simple yet complex visual narratives explore this very modern paradox.

Schlumbergers artistic style draws from pop art’s vibrant and dynamic aesthetic and spirit. The use of colorful, metallic paints infuses the artworks with a sense of energy and hardware, reflecting the nature of the digital world.

In keeping with the historic cross-pollination of pop arts’ use of paintings and merchandise, Clovis deploys a potent mix of streetware and lifestyle objects alongside his inventive paintings.

Clovis Schlumberger

Clovis Schlumberger is a multi media, Franco-American artist. His work includes drawings, paintings, animations, performances and installations. He holds a master from renowned school Ecole des Beaux Arts from Paris, France and is based in Los Angeles and Paris. He is particularly interested in semiology and visual codes, languages and the way they are established. Inspired by the Renaissance painting rules, he experimented on how the geometry of the composition of an image influences the perception of the content.
