To honor Earth Day 2023, Yiwei Gallery has partnered with the global non-profit Made Out of WHAT to celebrate ingenious artists and designers who have transformed the debris of everyday life into witty objects of beauty, utility and fun. “Let’s Talk Trash” features ten artists, both local and international, who create eye-popping artworks from materials that run the gamut from street sweeper bristles to plastic bags and refugee life jackets. In the words of featured artist Aaron Kramer : “Trash is the failure of imagination”.

Founded in 2016, Made Out of WHAT is a global project at the intersection of art, design, and necessity. Our goal is to support the healing of the planet by reimagining uses for the world’s dire TRASH problem. Did you know that last year, our feckless world generated 2.6 trillion pounds of garbage—the weight of about 7,000 Empire State buildings? By celebrating artists, designers, artisans, and innovators who ingeniously use TRASH to create objects of beauty and utility, we invite you to see the possibilities and join our fellow humans in coming up with unique creative solutions. This elegant, one-of-a-kind chaise, made out of San Fransisco street trash cast in resin, is an ironic twist on modernist chic and contrasting the notions of comfort and respite with gritty, urban physicality.
Made out of old cloth tape measures, and thread ( H 19 “ x 17 ⅜“), this wall piece is one of the highly crafted and thorough transformations of the artist's vast treasure trove of homely, overlooked items.
Fabrics, straps and other parts recuperated from refugees’ life jackets with some additional fabric scraps donated by the Greek islanders on Lesvos.
