Curated by Corinne Chaix, "The More You Look, The More You See" brings together artists Evan Maurer and Lhamo Yue Liu.
At Yiwei Gallery, we believe in nurturing connections among artists of diverse ages, genders, and origins. Evan Maurer and Lhamo Yue Liu, with their highly spiritual and investigative approach, exemplify the essence of this project.
While Evan explores European and American art, Surrealism, Native American Art, and African Art, Lhamo's work is influenced by Tibetan Buddhism.
Despite their different cultural explorations, they share a common belief—the interconnectedness of our world through spiritual energies.
Artist Evan Maurer lives and works in Santa Monica, CA.
Before moving to the West coast, Maurer was the Director of The Minneapolis Institute of Arts for sixteen years and has been named Director Emeritus of the MIA in recognition of his unique impact on the institution and the community where he made the museum free beginning 1989.
Maurer also was a Curator at the Art Institute of Chicago, an Art Historian and a writer specialized in 20th century European and American art, Surrealism, Native American Art and African Art.
Maurer holds a PhD in History of Art from the University of Pennsylvania and has many awards including 3 other honorary PHD and a chevalier of the order of Arts and letter given by the République of France.Maurer’s visual imagery is informed by his extensive studies in surrealism and tribal cultures, where art is presented on multiple level of identity. His artistic and scholar works are all piled together, exploring the same directions, the same the areas of meaning.Polymorphic, polythematic, everything in our world is interconnected by spiritual energies. Evan Maurer’s native American mentors and friends have opened his mind and heart to this. Aho!
Lhamo Yue Liu is an independent artist and curator based in Los Angeles, Shanghai, and Tibet. She graduated from the School of Visual Arts, New York, in 2020 and is currently pursuing an MFA at the California Institute of the Arts. In 2022, Liu co-founded the Remu Art project, dedicated to promoting the development of Contemporary Art in Tibet.
Liu has been featured in publications such as T magazine China and WSJ China, and her translation work includes "Mathematics and Art: A Cultural History" published by Princeton University Press in 2016.Her research and artistic creations center around exploring the origins and contemporary evolution of the cultural vocabulary of "the other." This involves delving into the culture, history, and politics of original ethnic groups and observing the spirituality that persists in modern society through cultural expressions in the post-colonial era.
Corinne Chaix, a French-born artist, became a part of the vibrant Venice art community two decades ago. Alongside her own painting career, she possesses a deep passion for sharing and promoting the work of artists she admires. Chaix has curated numerous exhibitions in Venice, featuring esteemed local artists such as Larry Bell, Ed Moses, and Charles Hill.
Her affiliation with Yiwei Gallery began in 2021 as an exhibiting artist, transitioned to curator in 2022, and she has now become a partner of Yiwei Gallery in 2023.
As a curator, Corinne Chaix places a special emphasis on intergenerational projects to challenge prevailing ageism stereotypes. Her aim is to foster artistic dialogue and collaborations among artists of diverse ages, genders, and backgrounds. Given the multicultural nature of Los Angeles and the Asian connections of Yiwei Gallery, Corinne actively promotes cultural exchanges both within the local community and on a global scale.
